As the winter chill sets in, we find ourselves asking the all too familiar question: “why is my skin so dry?” The cold and harsh winter temperatures, cold winds, and the lack of humidity in the winter cause there to be less moisture in the air. So, when the environment around us is dry, our skin tends to become dry too. This weather often leads to our skin feeling parched, flaky, and uncomfortable. Learn what we can do about it!
1. Avoid Harsh Skincare Care ProductsEvery time you wash your face or hair, you are stripping your body of natural oils. When using harsh products, the skin is often over-stripped. In the dry winter air, if our skin is overly stripped, it can become excessively dry as more moisture is being drawn out. So, it's very important in the winter to opt for gentle products for your hair and skin. These products include those that are sulfate and paraben-free, and deeply hydrating.
2. Consistently MoisturizeAdjusting your skin care routine in the winter is crucial to prevent your skin from easily drying out. It can be helpful to moisturize after being outside and after washing your hands or shower as this can help lock in moisture. It is best to choose a rich, hydrating moisturizer that is shown to create a moisture barrier on your skin, such as products with shea butter, ceramides and glycerin.
3. Avoid Extremely Hot Environments after Being in the ColdWhile cranking the heat in our homes may be so tempting after being in the cold, excessive hot temperatures can lead to an increase of dry skin. The same can be said for showers. Hot showers feel so shooting in cold weather, but they can strip our skin of our natural oils, leaving it more dehydrated. Try using humidifiers to provide moisture in the air as well as lukewarm showers to prevent overly drying out your skin.
4. Create Moisture from the Inside! In the winter, we are constantly losing moisture to our environment. To help our body replenish this moisture, it is more important than ever to make sure you are hydrating. Ensuring that you are drinking water throughout the day will help us build up moisture from the inside out! This can look anything like 8-12 glasses of water per day.
The winter weather can get our skin down, but understanding the factors that contribute to this can help us be proactive in taking care of our skin. Making simple adjustments to our routines and being more mindful about environmental factors can help to decrease some of the dryness that we feel. You can also let Yobee help!
